That pool is rad man

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Reagan was president, the Soviet Union was still that “other” super-power, big hair, legwarmers and acid-washed jeans were everywhere to be seen, and the music was, well, totally awesome. The 80s was a decade many of us remember and while there are some things we’d rather forget about it (leave the shoulder pads where they belong – in the closet), the iconic pop culture is something most of us remember fondly.

Whether you are a child of the 80s, grew up in them, lived through them or even just missed them, you should come down and experience them once again in the fantastic setting of the Villaggio Del Sole Pool and Entertainment Piazza here at M Resort. Our Totally Awesome 80s Pool Party is bound to shake you all night long.

80spoolpartyblog

The event is this coming Saturday, August 7 from 11am to 8pm. It’s free for all you local ladies 21+ and just $10 for the local gents and $15 for non-locals. You better come dressed in your finest 80s attire since the best dressed will win a free cabana rental and bottle of Skyy Vodka. We’ll also be raffling prizes like a free night stay, gift cards and more cabanas. You’ll find great drink specials like $1 M-80 shots (you’ll have to listen for a special 80s song to get in on that one) and $20 buckets of select beer. If you’re looking to pamper pre or post party, check out the Spa Mio special – $80 for any 50-minute massage or get in on the cabanas early since they’re going quick – they come with an 80s ultimate party pack. Call (707) 797-1808 to reserve yours now.

The event will be hosted by DJ D-Money and he’ll be pouring the sugar on you time after time. So don’t be too shy during this cruel summer – we’re all livin’ on a prayer ‘cause we just can’t get enough. Whether you’re Billie Jean or Jessie’s girl, drive a little red corvette or walk like an Egyptian, remember the girls just want to have fun  and fun is definitely to be had this Saturday at M Resort’s Totally Awesome 80s Pool Party.poolpartyblog

10 Off-the-Cuff Vol. I

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

M Resort is full of wonderful things, many of which we’ve told you about and many more you’re yet to learn about. Every once in a while, we’re going to bring you 10 off-the-cuff things we see and think are pretty cool around the property. Here’s your first look:

PorteCochereblogWhat is it? Well, it’s the porte cochere of course. That’s the fancy French name (literally meaning “coach gate” or “carriage porch”) for the covered area at the main entrance where valet, taxis, etc. are located. What’s so great about this? Well, the architecture is awfully interesting, with its swooping glass roofline and integrated beams. When’s the last time you saw a porte cochere you could see through?
 MSmellblog

Next up we’ve got something a little difficult to capture in an image but we did our best – the M Smell. Now this is one many of you have experienced, enjoyed and commented on. As casino scents go, this one is tough to beat.

Carpetblog

Okay, okay – it’s carpet. But come on, some casino carpets out there make you positively nauseous! And while we’d never claim this one was subtle, it’s tasteful, warm, modern and fits the M just right.

  CasinoChairblog

Yep, that’s a chair. What the heck is cool about a chair? Well, if you spend any time playing slots you’ll know. We didn’t shirk when it came to spending money on chairs – they’re comfy and perhaps just as important, they’re light. Ever tried to move a chair at a casino and thought it surely must be bolted to the floor? Errgh.

FinishingRoomblog
How about a little back-of-house for you? What’s this you ask? Looks pretty plain and boring, but it’s actually pretty cool. These are windows that allow team members to see inside the bakery finishing room. As we walk by on our day-to-day travels, we can sometimes catch a glimpse of our pastry chefs decorating those amazing cakes and desserts you see around the property.

BeerWineBuffetblog

Thirsty? Beer and wine is included in the price of Las Vegas’ best buffet. Enough said.

BathroomTVblog

Ah yes. If you haven’t stayed with us yet, it’s time. Why? Well the rooms are suite (and yes, we meant to misspell that!) and have some great features. That’s a TV in the mirror so you can catch up on the morning news when you’re getting ready, check the weather if you’re travelling, or perhaps not miss one minute of that late night program before you hop into that delightful bed.
SpaSculptureblog

There’s an awful lot of amazing art at M if you take a moment to stroll about and look for it. This is the sculpture outside Spa Mio. It’s just cool.

VIPCabanapoolblog

Never seen this before? Time to get yourself a VIP cabana and spend a day at the pool. That’s right, there’s a little private pool hiding at the back of them. Awesome.
TeamMembersblog

Well, we couldn’t get an image of them all, so this was the best we could come up with today. Without our Team Members, M Resort would just be a big building full of nifty stuff. With them, it’s a big building full of nifty stuff, smiles and outstanding service that will keep you coming back for more.

Get fit with a poolside view

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

FCentranceblog FCmachines1blogReally – who wants to work out and stare at a blank wall or a bunch of other people working out? Not us and not you. That’s why here at M Resort we made sure you could work out with a view.

 FCmachines2blog FCweightsblog

Tucked behind Spa Mio you’ll find our fitness center. It offers all the things you’d expect – rowing machines, stair master, treadmills and ellipticals, and a whole array of weight machines and free weights (aren’t they nifty with the M logo?!). You’ll find all the equipment is new, well-maintained and clean. Water and fresh fruit? On the house. Need a towel? We keep ours on ice for you. Headphones? Yep.

But what is it that really makes the fitness center at M Resort stand out? The view. We certainly offer an array of televisions if it’s the latest news, sports or celebrity gossip you want to catch up on, but if you’re looking for something to really get you motivated, try gazing out at the spectacular Villaggio Del Sole pool and entertainment piazza. It’s hard not to want to do 10 more reps or 15 more minutes when those azure waters are staring back your way, filled with frolicking summer guests.

FCviewblogLet’s face it, it’s easy to indulge here at M – with things like the best buffet in Vegas and 96 beers on tap offered, who could blame you? But don’t worry. The view in the fitness center is waiting for a workout.

The fitness center is open every day from 6am to 7pm. Access is available with a Spa Mio day pass which is $15 for hotel guests and $25 for non-guests.

A Day at M for Dad

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Father’s Day is almost upon us and there’s no better way to spoil your dad than with a delightful day at M Resort. We know it can be difficult to come up with special things to do for dads on Father’s Day, so here’s a few of our favorite picks that are sure to please him:

SpaMioblogFirst, get him ready for his big day with a trip to Spa Mio. He may resist at first, but you can assure him spas are for guys too and don’t worry, there’s a “man cave.” The “Mio Man Time Package offers a 50-minute Therapeutic Massage and a Haircut or Master Shave for just $140 (a $50 savings). Or how about the “Dad’s Day Out” package – a 50-minute Relaxation Massage and a For Him Facial for just $185 (a $70 savings). Maybe the “Mr. Big Package” – a Master Shave or Haircut and Manicure and Pedicure for dad for just $125 (a $15 savings). Believe us, if he’s never had a master shave it’s going to make his day!

BabyCakesblogHe’s bound to be hungry so head over to Baby Cakes where you can get dad a delicious cup of coffee (or he can even indulge in that mocha-frappa-latte-whipped-cream-thingy we know he loves but he’ll never admit to) and a fresh-made pastry. Italian donut anyone?

poolblogThen it’s time for a little fun in the Vegas sun. Rent dad a cabana or day bed where he can relax poolside with a fresh summer cocktail or ice cold beer. There’s cool blue waters and spectacular scenery for him to enjoy while he works hard at being lazy.

StudioBblogHungry again!? It’s time to settle down and indulge in the best buffet in Las Vegas – Studio B. Beer and wine are included in the price and when it comes to eats, he’ll find more choices than he can imagine – delicious appetizers, entrees and desserts that won’t quit! The whole family can go back for more…and more…and more.

CasinoFloorblogWe know dad has given you money a TON of times, so maybe you should slip him a twenty and take him to his favorite game. Is he a blackjack man? Poker? Maybe he likes to hit the slots? Give him the chance to win it big on his big day.

32degreesblogLet’s face it, most dads like beer, sports and TV. Just off the casino floor he’ll find his dream trifecta in 32° Draft Bar. With 96 beers on tap there’s something he’s sure to like while he watches all the games on a slew of TVs. He can even pop over to the Race & Sports Book to make a bet. If he’d rather stay where he’s at, we’ve got mobile gaming and betting for him!

TerzettoblogIt’s time for dad’s special Father’s Day meal and there’s no better place than Terzetto. It’s home to hand-selected prime cuts of beef, including a reserve list from the Marnell family ranch in Montana. Dine on the terrace and watch the sun set with a spectacular view of the Strip and valley.

Remember that dads need the best when it comes to rest and relaxation this Father’s Day and you’ll find the best here at M Resort. And don’t forget to tell him you love him and thank him for all he does!

Meet Nancy J. – Concierge Extraordinaire

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

“Can’t we just ask the concierge?” Have you ever heard that question or asked that question yourself while on vacation and NancyJConciergeblogstaying at a hotel or resort? The answer is “yes” you can ask the concierge.  Here at the M Resort, we have a concierge named Nancy Jeskey and she is the best. Seriously, she is one of the best. She’s one of  just 450 concierge in the United States to be awarded the Golden Keys of Les Clefs d’Or - more on that later.

She’s the best because she can help you with just about anything, has incredible experience and knows Vegas like you know your own home. And trust us, if you want live camels in front of your room, Nancy is the gal to get it done. We sat down with her to find out what exactly a concierge does and why she likes it so much.  Here’s what she had to say:

Q:  Tell us what a concierge does.

A:   Concierges are here to serve every guest – to help them with anything they need. I say, I’ll do whatever the guests needs as long as it is not illegal, immoral or unkind! In a nutshell, we help guests plan their day, provide information and make arrangements for them.

Q:  How did you decide you wanted to be a concierge?

A:   I love to travel and I truly love to help people. My husband always got a kick out me because if I saw people looking at a map trying to figure out where to go I’d walk over and help them – tell them how to get to where they were planning to go, suggest places to eat, things like that.

Q:  How many years have you been a concierge?

A:   12 years – I entered the concierge profession in 1993 in Indian Wells, California and became a Les Clefs d’Or member in 1998. I was a concierge in California for 10 years and was Palm Springs Life Concierge of the Year in 1996.

Q:  So, what’s “Les Clefs d’Or”?

A:   Les Clefs d’Or is an international organization of professional hotel concierges. To join, an applicant must have five years experience in the hotel industry and be sponsored by two current members. The application process is so stringent that the organization has just 450 members in the United States.

Q:  What kind of training did you have?

A:   Your training is really on your knowledge of the city. I am a member of the Southern Nevada Hotel Concierge Association and a past president of the Desert Resorts Concierge Association in the Palm Springs area.

Q:  Where did you work prior to coming to the M Resort?

A:   I’ve worked at Renaissance in Las Vegas, Esmeralda Renaissance in Palm Springs and the Hyatt Grand Champion. I’ve been with the M Resort since its opening.

Q:  What, in your opinion, are the “must-have” characteristics to be a good concierge?

A:   Knowledge of the city you live in is key. I’d also say the ability to multi-task, a genuine desire to help others and good ethics and conduct – remember you represent your hotel.

Q:  What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A:   The people. They are so grateful for your help. I can make them feel at home and comfortable. Guests trust concierges and expect us to know the ins and outs of the city. It’s rewarding when I can help them navigate their way around. This is my most favorite job by far. I hope to be a concierge for many more years.

Q:  How do you stay on top of what is happening around the city?

A:   I belong to professional associations so we are able to network and share what’s happening in the city with each other. Networking is so important. I read everything I can, experience as much as I possibly and drive around constantly. Las Vegas changes all time so it’s important to network and get out and experience the city. If I’m helping a guest with tickets to see a show at a property on the Strip then I want to be able to tell them exactly where they need to go from the parking lot all the way to the show entrance.

Q:  What is a typical day like for you?

A:   A typical day is helping people with anything from shopping recommendations, to purchasing tickets for shows to helping them with transportation.

Q:  What has been one of the most unique things that a guest has asked you to help with?

A:   I had a guest in Palm Springs ask me to get two live camels and stage them in front of his friend’s room as a practical joke. If you can believe it, it only took me 20 minutes to get them rented! It was so much fun.

I also once had a Sultan whose entourage called down and asked me to get him and his entire entourage on a plane to Paris that same day. His entourage took up two entire floors of the property so you can imagine how many of them there were. I called around, spoke to my counterparts in Paris and had them all on a plane within three hours.

Q:  What are your favorite places in Vegas?

A:   I love the M – it’s a beautiful property and definitely one of my favorites. If guests are looking for places on the Strip to eat I tell them to eat at Joel Robuchon or Fleur de Lys or to see Human Nature. It is one of my most favorite shows. I also really enjoy Le Rêve.

Q:  What do you recommend guests at the M do while they’re here?

A:   Veloce is an absolute must – it’s romantic and has one of the best views of the city. Spa Mio treatments are another must while they’re here. Hostile Grape is my favorite place – I love the entertainment and the wine, of course! And now that pool season is here, a cabana by the pool is another must-do.

Q: You’ve traveled extensively. Where is your favorite place that you’ve traveled?

A:   Traveling has certainly helped me to be a better concierge. Hawaii is my favorite place, but if I could live anywhere I’d live 4four months in Hong Kong, four months in Paris, four months here in Vegas and four months in Hawaii.

Q:  How you met any interesting celebrities or helped any interesting people?

A:   George Hamilton was one of my favorites and just the nicest person. I also enjoyed helping Pamela Anderson and Frank Sinatra. I knew Frank personally and was there for the christening of his grandkids.

Barbershop – and we’re not talking acapella

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

You thought Salon & Spa Mio was just for the ladies, right? It may surprise you to know there’s also a full-service barbershop here at M Resort. And what would a full-service barbershop be without a Master Barber? Never heard of barber2blogsuch a thing? Well let us fill you in.

Like other skilled labor professions, to become a Master Barber requires significant education, experience through an apprenticeship, and licensure through an accredited state agency. Let us ask you this: if you insist on a licensed professional whom you know has been through significant education, hands-on training and testing to let’s say, fix your pipes, wouldn’t you insist on the same level of professionalism and experience to cut your hair? (Remember, the world doesn’t see your pipes, but the world certainly sees your hair!)

Here at M Resort, we offer you a 14-year Master Barber veteran. “Vinnie the Barber” as he’s known (insert mobster joke here) was born and raised in the metropolitan Detroit area. For the past nine years, he owned and operated “Vinnie’s Barbershop” in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, but living and working in Vegas has always been his dream, a dream he realized when he moved here four months ago. Our man Vinnie takes great pride in his profession and specializes in personalized straight-razor shaves (insert mobster joke #2 here) and master barber haircuts.

barberchairblogIf you’ve never had a master shave with a hot towel and straight razor, it’s something you absolutely have to experience at least once in your life. Though we’re warning you now, once you get this kind of treatment from a professional, you’ll never want to shave at home again. If you’re looking for the best barber experience you can get in Vegas, come down and see Vinnie in M’s very own barbershop – he’s here Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. For services and pricing, just call Salon & Spa Mio at 702-797-1800.

Celebrity Hairstylin’ at Spa Mio

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Spa Mio Entrance

You probably already know that Spa Mio is a world-class spa, but what you probably don’t know is that we have a celebrity hair stylist in our spa. Enter – Anthony B.  Anthony got the chance to work at this year’s 61st Primetime Emmy Awards!

We sat down with him to talk about everything from stylin’ hair at the Emmy Awards, to how he got started in the biz and why he loves it so much.

Tell to us about the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards. That must have been a huge honor for you to get the call to style the hair of celebrities.  What was the experience like?

Styling hair at an awards show is such a fun, hectic experience. The day of the Emmy’s I worked a solid 12 hours. We had dry runs to make sure each celebrity liked their hair style and then we did the real thing.  It’s crazy! I’ve styled hair at awards shows before, but each one is obviously different. I’m working on different hair and there are different needs involved.

I love working the shows though because the energy is always so high. People are rehearsing on stage, production crews are setting up and there’s just a lot going on around you and it’s exciting.

How did the opportunity come about?

I’ve worked several awards shows styling celebrities’ hair, so I usually get the call to do the shows from people that I know in the industry and off I go.

Who were some of the celebrities that you styled for this year’s Emmy Awards?

I did a lot of the presenters’ hair. I worked on Kate Walsh, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Blake Lively and Debra Messing.

Any fun tidbits you have about working on their hair?

They all have great hair and they were incredibly down-to-earth and very nice. Sorry, nothing juicy!

What did you take away from the experience?

I loved seeing the behind-the-scenes. It always amazes me how much goes into these shows. You see the crew setting up and all these well-known actors and actresses actually rehearsing their lines. I saw Bob Newhart – he’s legendary – rehearsing his lines. It’s seeing things like that that make it fun for me.

What do you like most about your job?

I love doing hair. I was born to do it. I enjoy interacting with people and giving them confidence with just a haircut. I really do love working at Spa Mio. The place is truly beautiful. I’ve worked in hot salons around the country, but this one just blows me away.

How did you get started?

I’ve been a hairstylist for almost 20 years. I did my friend’s hair one day when I was a kid and just honest-to-God liked doing it and knew it was what I wanted to do. I’ve been able to live all over – Las Vegas, London, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. I’ve worked with some of the top people and in some of the top places in the industry and it has been great.

What advice do you have for people when it comes to hair?

  1. Really know your hair.
  2. If you like someone’s hair cut, don’t be afraid to walk up to them and ask who cuts it.
  3. Listen to your stylist.
  4. Keep is simple. Don’t try to reproduce exactly what the stylist did in the salon. We use different styling products and unless you have those same products at home, you won’t be able to replicate the look exactly.
  5. Don’t get into a rut. Make sure you re-invent yourself and try new hairstyles and color.
  6. Above all: Do not cut your own hair.

Spa Mio Lounge
Spa Mio and Salon is open daily from 7 am-7pm. Be sure to stop in and say hi to Anthony when you’re here.
