Shooting for Forbes Stars

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

forbestgIf you’re hotel-hopping around Las Vegas during your vacation you may notice that many of the high-end hotels in town boast some sort of star rating including ours!

For the third consecutive year in a row, our resort has been honored with the Forbes Four-Star Award and for the second consecutive year our spa has also been recognized with the Forbes Four-Star Award. The M continues to take its place as one of only 177 hotels and 104 spas in the world to receive the awards. But, what do all those stars mean for our guests?

With a reputation for defining the extraordinary, Forbes Travel Guide conducts regular inspections of hotels, restaurants and spas across the nation and issues an annual guidebook listing the destinations on a ratings scale of One to Five Stars. The ratings reflect specific, strict standards regarding the facilities themselves and more importantly the service that the rated resorts, eateries and spas offer to their guests.

Forbes inspectors spend two nights and three days assessing each hotel in numerous different categories. They visit hotel properties unannounced and rate them as One, Two of Three Star hotels. If the inspector believes the hotel is a potential candidate for a Four or Five Star rating, another Forbes inspector is sent back to the hotel undercover to evaluate the hotel’s service with a checklist of over 500 items.

Properties must score in the 80th percentile on the Forbes’ ratings scale to earnFour-Stars. The score itself is weightedheavily on service. A portion of the rating is measured by the experience that the inspector has while the facility itself is also factored into the score. Forbes rates about 8,000 of the approximately 50,000 hotels in North America. Of the 8,000 that they do rate, only a few earn a coveted Four and Five Star Ratings.

ForbesCake
Assistant Executive Pastry Chef, Don Ango crafted celebratory cakes for our Team Members in recognition of the Forbes Four-Star Award.

Some of the 2012 Forbes Travel Guide  Four-Star resorts in Nevada include: Aria Resort & Casino, Bellagio Las Vegas, The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino and Wynn Las Vegas. We feel very proud to be among such elite hotels in Las Vegas.

The 2012 Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star spas in Nevada include: Canyon Ranch SpaClub at The Venetian & The Palazzo, Spa Bellagio at Bellagio, The Spa at Aria and The Spa at Trump.

Our resort and spa have been able to take their guest service to the next level thanks to our Team Members. We’re proud of their strong commitment to delivering memorable service experiences to our guests.

Star Power

bathtubblogSo it’s time for you to plan your vacation. Maybe you’re headed for the beaches of Hawaii, perhaps to the lights and glamour of New York City, sunny Florida or maybe even to fabulous Las Vegas. How do you decide which hotel you’ll stay at? Is it the price? Is it the value for the money? How about the amenities they offer? Is guest service important to you? What do you expect to find in your room? The list of questions can truly go on and on.

There’s no doubt you have an almost endless supply of choices when it comes to picking the hotel for your vacation, especially in “tourist destinations.” Many people (in fact most these days) begin their search for their vacation hotel online. The Internet is home to a bevy of travel rating websites. These can certainly be helpful, but they can also be a bit confusing. Why is it that Joe S. from Boston said “the room was amazing with a spectacular view and comfortable bed” and Donna G. from Sacramento said “mediocre view and the bed was stiff as a board”?

On these sites, you’ll find answers to pretty much every one of those questions you ask yourself before making a choice – a LOT of answers. The problem is there are so many conflicting opinions, experiences and points-of-view. How do you know when a source is credible? Do you trust Joe or Donna? Were they having a bad day? Were they having an amazing day? Did Joe get a freebie or comp from that hotel? Does that hotel actually advertise or have a partnership with the travel website and everyone’s getting a cut when you book your room?

What if there was a completely objective, independent, trusted source with more than 50 years of rating hotels for travelers? There is of course and it’s the Forbes Travel Guide, formerly the Mobil Travel Guide. Here’s what they have to say:

“Sorting through the scores of travel ratings in the marketplace today takes effort—many are biased and the source of information is a mystery. There is a proven, time-tested gold standard for hospitality ratings, and we invented it. Forbes Travel Guide provides travelers with the most objective, most disciplined ratings for hotels, restaurants and spas in the world. The hospitality industry respects and reveres the Five Star rating system, and consumers have put their faith in it for 50 years as they decide where to stay, dine or play.” http://www.forbestravelguide.com/

There are about 50,000 hotels in the United States and Forbes Travel Guide recommends just 3,000. That’s just six percent. The standards are incredibly high and the anonymous inspectors have hundreds of criteria to consider when it comes to rating a property. What that means to you as a consumer, is that when you choose a Forbes Travel Guide star-rated property, you know what you’re getting and you know it’s high-quality. It means the guest service is exceptional. It means the hotel is squeaky clean. It means the amenities are abundant and top-notch.

FTGlogoblogBottom line? Star ratings DO matter and you should absolutely consider them when choosing your hotel. Here at M Resort, we’ve got four and we’re looking for more. And don’t forget, when it comes to spas, Forbes Travel rates those too and Spa Mio just so happens to have four stars as well.

What makes a resort?

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

skiresortblogWhat makes a resort? It’s an interesting question and one you may not have considered before. There are a lot of places around the world that are considered and/or call themselves resorts – there are ski resorts, destination resorts, beach resorts, spa resorts, golf resorts – the list goes on and on. But can anyone just call themselves a resort? Sure they can, it just doesn’t necessarily make it true.

A resort isn’t just a hotel, and it isn’t just a hotel with a restaurant and a pool. A very broad definition of a resort is somewhere you go for rest and relaxation that provides a number of amenities such as a hotel, dining, entertainment and more. A resort is somewhere you can go and essentially have everything you need to rest, relax and enjoy yourself without having to go anywhere else.

Because the resort definition is fairly broad and can cover quite a number of different things, you have to do some thinking and planning when choosing the resort you want to enjoy. Here in Vegas, we have a variety of resorts. Most of them offer similar amenities – hotel, gaming, dining, entertainment, pool and spa. So how do you make your choice? Perhaps the most important question you need to ask yourself is what do you want your experience to be? Do you want the hustle and bustle of the Strip and to be surrounded by other visitors? Do you want something a bit more secluded, where you can get away from the crowd? Is somewhere with 3,000 rooms your style, or 300?

LVBLVDblogWe here at M Resort of course we have an opinion and you can guess what it is. We don’t have anything bad to say about our “megaresort” neighbors to the north – it wouldn’t be Vegas without them. But one of the things we tried to accomplish with our property is our vision of a “true resort” – somewhere you can get away to and actually rest and relax. Don’t get us wrong, there’s plenty of action to be had here – from gaming and live entertainment to poolside parties. Heck, even our buffet has a lot of action! Yet M Resort allows you to experience Las Vegas at arm’s length, but still offers you the ability to grab hold of Sin City and jump right in if you want.

poolchairsblogSometimes it’s hard to enjoy a resort when there are so many other people trying to enjoy it as well. Sometimes you don’t want to push your way through the crowded sidewalks. Sometimes, you want your resort to offer you rest and relaxation on top of the excitement and action. Remember, it’s your vacation and you should get what you want out of it. If you’re looking for the perfect compromise when you come to Vegas, we think we’ve got it here for you at M.

“The Frontlines” Housekeeping

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

It’s time for our second edition of “The Frontlines” – a behind-the-scenes video series where we, the social media team, experience firsthand what it takes to work the frontlines here at M Resort. In our last video, we took you behind the scenes of gift day at the iMagine Rewards center. This time we’re headed across the property and up the tower with Maria as we become housekeepers for the day cleaning guest rooms.

Housekeeping is an incredibly challenging job; you have to work quickly and efficiently to get rooms cleaned in time but you also have to uphold strict service and cleanliness standards. Possessing enormous attention to detail and the ability to meet some serious deadlines takes a special kind of person.

Let’s just say we won’t be quitting our day jobs anytime soon and we’re awfully thankful to have Maria and the rest of the housekeeping team keeping the guest rooms here at M clean and comfy. We hope you enjoy the video.

Ten Off the Cuff Vol. III

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

We know you were waiting!!! Here are 10 more off-the-cuff things we think are pretty cool at M Resort that you should know about:

TerzettopatioblogIf you haven’t dined outside on the Terzetto patio, it’s a must. The view is great and the infinity pools are definitely cool. They also make a perfect aisle if you’re looking for a unique spot to get married.

ObeliskblogThe obelisk out by the porte cochere is something you should take a gander at. It’s made of bronze and kind of resembles a gun sight. If you follow its line, it travels through the lobby, out over the pool, across the main stage and out to the famous Las Vegas strip.

MainstageblogAnd how about that main stage? An amazing view for guests and performers alike.

BallroomblogOkay, okay, maybe it’s just a ballroom, but it’s a HUGE ballroom and you might not have even known it was here tucked away on the spa level. Reception after Terzetto patio ceremony? Yep.

FitnessCenterviewblog

There’s no better motivation to get fit than gazing out over our spectacular pool. Our fitness center offers a view for aesthetics and to help you keep going.

HashHousetractorblog

Antique tractor in a casino? Cool.

CeilingTilesblogYou may not have known what you were looking at, but the tiles covering the columns and ceiling on the casino floor are mother of pearl.

GlassElevatorblogMaybe you’ve never used it or even seen it, but there’s a sweet glass elevator between the Lobby Bar and Oyster Bar – it travels down to the spa level and then further down to Hostile Grape.

Mgastationblog

That’s right, M Resort has a gas station and you can use your iMagine Rewards points there. Nice.

VigTripleCrownblog

Can’t remember all the Triple Crown Winners? Who took the World Series in 1966? The walls at Vig Deli are covered in sports factoids to peak your interest or settle the debate.

Another 10! Check ‘em out next time you visit us here at M!

“Thank you for calling M Resort…”

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

pbxblog7You might think a call center (aka a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) or operator) would be one of the least entertaining and interesting departments in a business. That’s definitely not the case here at M Resort. The call center team is incredibly knowledgeable about the property and how everything here at M works. They have to be as they handle between 2,000 and 2,400 calls a day. They’re comprised of a 23 person team with 6-8 working at any given time and yes, they’re open for business 24 hours a day.pbxblog1

The call center is one of those places where you know that the people working there take it upon themselves to create a fun environment and one which also motivates and educates simultaneously. Every quarter, the call center gets a new “theme.” Last quarter it was a luau – complete with palm trees, leis and a volcano. This quarter though, it’s time to hit the high seas, raise the Jolly Roger and buckle on your cutlass. Pirates have invaded the PBX. From pirate themed notices and signs, to a treasure chest suggestion box and a huge pirate galleon blasting its way through the cubicles, the call center is decorated head-to-toe in swashbuckling scenery.pbxblog4

The decorations aren’t just for show either. They certainly create an entertaining work environment (we heard that for the few days between themes it’s a little hard to deal with the plain old office!) but they also are an opportunity for team building and the reinforcement of the call center’s commitment to service standards. The whole team gets to vote on the themes as well as participate in the decorating (by the way, they said they’re going to “spook things up” a little for Halloween). The pbxblog3messages displayed remind everyone about M Resort’s commitment to guest service and upholding the standards of our Forbes four-star rating. You’ll find everything from: “Staff is polite and maintains a gracious tone and appropriate pace over entire call” to “Service must be handled without excessive delays or interruptions” and many more. If you’ve ever had the pleasure – and yes, it absolutely is a pleasure – to speak to one of our Team Members in the call center, you’ll know they take their service standards very seriously…and have a whole lot of fun in a creative atmosphere at the same time.pbxblog9

Ten Off the Cuff Vol. II

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

We know you wanted another one, right? Here are 10 more off-the-cuff things we think are pretty cool at M Resort that you should know about:

The pastries at Baby Cakes are divine. Have one with your coffee, as an afternoon snack or take a big bag home or to the office. Believe us, they’re gonna love you for it.

We’ve told you a bit about the loft suites and this is definitely one of the coolest features. As if the spectacular view, immaculate room and floor-to-ceiling windows weren’t enough, the TV above the bed appears magically and tilts to just the right angle for you to watch while sprawled out in that oh-so-comfy bed.

VelocePatioblogAbove that loft suite? One of the most amazing outdoor spaces in Vegas. The patio outside Veloce’s bar and lounge is something you have to experience. Relax with some sangria and watch the sunset.

imaginerewardsblogThe iMagine Rewards Club is cool. The point system is better, the gifts are better, the staff is friendlier, the cards just look niftier….

naturallightblog

And while you’re using that card, enjoy some of that natural light in the casino. WHAT?! NATURAL LIGHT IN A CASINO?! Yup.

TerzettoTableblogBeen to Terzetto yet? It’s our steakhouse and if you’re looking for a very cool place to dine, try the feature table. “Look mom, no legs!”

HGceilingblog

When it comes to cool things suspended from the ceiling, head down to Hostile Grape. Those are thousands of slats from wine barrels which came from the Marnell winery in Napa. An artist put them together, numbered them, took them all apart, then reassembled them here at the property.

cardsblogDon’t know about you, but logoed playing cards are just cool. They scream “Vegas.”

StudioKitchenblogHopefully you’ve seen it by now, but if you haven’t, you need to check it out. It’s a restaurant, it’s a buffet, it’s a show kitchen/TV studio? Just like you’d find your favorite celeb chef in on TV, there’s a show kitchen inside Studio B with lights, cameras and plenty of cooking action with Martini Time – Vegas’ only live cooking show.

bettingstationblogSports betting at M is something you have to try. Look at the betting stations!

That’s 10! Check them out next time you visit us here at M!

10 Off-the-Cuff Vol. I

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

M Resort is full of wonderful things, many of which we’ve told you about and many more you’re yet to learn about. Every once in a while, we’re going to bring you 10 off-the-cuff things we see and think are pretty cool around the property. Here’s your first look:

What is it? Well, it’s the porte cochere of course. That’s the fancy French name (literally meaning “coach gate” or “carriage porch”) for the covered area at the main entrance where valet, taxis, etc. are located. What’s so great about this? Well, the architecture is awfully interesting, with its swooping glass roofline and integrated beams. When’s the last time you saw a porte cochere you could see through?

MSmellblogNext up we’ve got something a little difficult to capture in an image but we did our best – the M Smell. Now this is one many of you have experienced, enjoyed and commented on. As casino scents go, this one is tough to beat.

Carpetblog

Okay, okay – it’s carpet. But come on, some casino carpets out there make you positively nauseous! And while we’d never claim this one was subtle, it’s tasteful, warm, modern and fits the M just right.

CasinoChairblog

Yep, that’s a chair. What the heck is cool about a chair? Well, if you spend any time playing slots you’ll know. We didn’t shirk when it came to spending money on chairs – they’re comfy and perhaps just as important, they’re light. Ever tried to move a chair at a casino and thought it surely must be bolted to the floor? Errgh.

How about a little back-of-house for you? What’s this you ask? Looks pretty plain and boring, but it’s actually pretty cool. These are windows that allow team members to see inside the bakery finishing room. As we walk by on our day-to-day travels, we can sometimes catch a glimpse of our pastry chefs decorating those amazing cakes and desserts you see around the property.

BeerWineBuffetblogThirsty? Beer and wine is included in the price of Las Vegas’ best buffet. Enough said.

BathroomTVblog

Ah yes. If you haven’t stayed with us yet, it’s time. Why? Well the rooms are suite (and yes, we meant to misspell that!) and have some great features. That’s a TV in the mirror so you can catch up on the morning news when you’re getting ready, check the weather if you’re travelling, or perhaps not miss one minute of that late night program before you hop into that delightful bed.

SpaSculptureblog

There’s an awful lot of amazing art at M if you take a moment to stroll about and look for it. This is the sculpture outside Spa Mio. It’s just cool.

VIPCabanapoolblog

Never seen this before? Time to get yourself a VIP cabana and spend a day at the pool. That’s right, there’s a little private pool hiding at the back of them. Awesome.

TeamMembersblog

Well, we couldn’t get an image of them all, so this was the best we could come up with today. Without our Team Members, M Resort would just be a big building full of nifty stuff. With them, it’s a big building full of nifty stuff, smiles and outstanding service that will keep you coming back for more.

A Q&A with Nancy J. – M Resort Concierge

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

NancyJConciergeblog“Can’t we just ask the concierge?” Have you ever heard that question or asked that question yourself while on vacation and staying at a hotel or resort? The answer is “yes.” Here at M Resort, we have a concierge that is absolutely one of the best you’ll ever have the pleasure to meet – not just because she can help you with just about anything, has incredible experience and knows Vegas like you know your own home, but well, she’s just the kind of person you’re happy to know. So here she is, Nancy Jeskey, Concierge:

Q:  Tell us what a concierge does.
A:   Concierges are here to serve every guest – to help them with anything they need as long as it is not illegal, immoral or unkind. We help guests plan their day, provide information and make arrangements for them.

Q:  How did you decide you wanted to be a concierge?
A:   I love to travel and I truly love to help people.

Q:  How many years have you been a concierge?
A:   17 years – I entered the concierge profession in 1993 in Indian Wells, California and became a Les Clefs d’Or member in 1998. I was a concierge in California for 10 years and was Palm Springs Life Concierge of the Year in 1996.

Q:  So, what’s “Les Clefs d’Or”?
A:   Les Clefs d’Or is an international organization of professional hotel concierges. To join an applicant must have five years experience in the hotel industry and be sponsored by two current members. The application process is so stringent that the organization has just 450 members in the United States.

Q:  What kind of training did you have?
A:   Your training is really on your knowledge of the city. I am a member of the Southern Nevada Hotel Concierge Association and a past president of the Desert Resorts Concierge Association in the Palm Springs area.

Q:  What, in your opinion, are the “must-have” characteristics to be a good concierge?
A:   Knowledge of the city you live in is key. I’d also say the ability to multi-task, a genuine desire to help others and good ethics and conduct – remember you represent your hotel.

Q:  Where did you work prior to coming to the M Resort?
A:   I’ve worked at Renaissance in Las Vegas, Esmeralda Renaissance in Palm Springs and the Hyatt Grand Champion. I’ve been with the M Resort since its opening.

Q:  What is the most rewarding thing about your job?
A:   The people. They are so grateful for your help. I can make them feel at home and comfortable. Guests trust concierges and expect concierges to know the ins and outs of the city. It’s rewarding when I can help them navigate the city. This is my most favorite job by far. I hope to be a concierge for many more years.

Q:  How do you stay on top of what is happening around the city?
A:   I belong to professional associations so we are able to network and share what’s happening in the city with each other. Networking is so important. I read everything I can, experience as much as I possibly and drive around constantly.

Q:  What is a typical day like for you?
A:   A typical day is helping people with anything from shopping recommendations, to purchasing tickets for shows to helping them with transportation.

Q:  What has been one of the most unique things that someone/a guest has asked you to help with?
A:   I had a guest in Palm Springs ask me to get two live camels and stage them in front of his friend’s room as a practical joke. If you can believe it, it only took me 20 minutes to get them rented. It was so much fun.

I also once had a Sultan whose entourage called down and asked me to get him and his entire entourage on a plane to Paris that same day. His entourage took up two entire floors of the property so you can imagine how many of them there were. I called around, spoke to my counterparts in Paris and had them all on a plane within three hours.

Q:  What are your favorite places in Vegas?
A:   I love the M – it’s a beautiful property and definitely one of my favorites. If guests are looking for places on the Strip to eat I tell them Joel Robuchon or Fleur de Lys. One of my most favorite shows is Human Nature. It’s lively and just a great show. I also really enjoy Le Rêve.

Q:  What do you recommend guests at the M do while they’re here?
A:   Veloce is an absolute must – it’s romantic and has one of the best views of the city. Spa treatments are another must while you’re here. Hostile Grape is my favorite place – I love the entertainment and the wine, of course! And now that pool season is here, a cabana by the pool is another must-do.

Q:  Favorite place that you’ve traveled
A:  Traveling has certainly helped me to be a better concierge. Hawaii is my favorite place, but if I could live anywhere I’d live 4 months in Hong Kong, 4 months in Paris, 4 months here in Vegas and 4 months in Hawaii.

Q:  Interesting celebrities/ people you’ve helped or met
A:   George Hamilton was one of my favorites and just the nicest person. I also enjoyed helping Pamela Anderson and Frank Sinatra. I knew Frank personally and was there for the christening of his grandkids.
